I use the ancient sgraffito method of decoration to create the images seen on the vessels’ surfaces. I begin by wheel-throwing a porcelain vessel, finishing the form (trimming away excess clay, or adding handles or spouts) and letting the clay dry thoroughly. I then coat the clay in a very thin layer of liquid clay which has been stained black. After this has dried, I take a variety of very sharp dental tools and razor blades to incise the vessel’s surface and create the images that you see.
